Scarborough

Welcome to...

Scarborough

Scarborough has a population of about 22,500 people and is home to the largest contiguous tidal marsh in Maine along with several of the areas beloved beaches. You can find a diverse mix of properties here ranging from farmhouses to modern condos. It’s a popular area due to it’s proximity to Portland and the ocean.

Location of Scarborough

Scarborough has a fantastic location close to many area highlights. It abuts Old Orchard Beach in York County to the south, South Portland to the north, Buxton and Gorham to the west and the ocean is east. It lacks a true town center but has plenty of amenities for those wanting a bit more space than what Portland provides.

Places of Interest

A few of my favorite Scarborough spots are below:

Pine Point Beach is beautiful in all seasons and extends from a jetty on Pine Point to Old Orchard Beach. There is municipal parking for a fee in the summer at the main entrance with restrooms/showers. You can also luck out with street parking along East Grand Ave towards Old Orchard. The beach is sandy and great for walking/running, sandcastles, and swimming if you dare to brave the cold temps!

The marsh is a birder’s paradise accessed here by a portion of the Eastern Trail on Pine Point Rd. with a small parking lot. The trail is lovely and spans across the width of the open marsh. You can see bald eagles, great blue heron, glossy ibis, and many other foul and birds who frequent the marsh. The Audubon Center is nearby on Pine Point Rd. offering canoe or paddle board tours and rentals.

Higgins Beach is a popular spot in Scarborough with a dramatic tide fluctuation-it’s narrow at high tide and expansive at low tide. You can even see an old ship wreck that reveals itself as the tide goes out. The market is open seasonally and is located at the turn to the beach (82 Spurwink Rd). They offer wood-fired bagels, pizza, lobster rolls and misc. market items. Everything is amazing!

The preserve is part of the Scarborough Land Trust and located off Broadturn Rd. offering 2.9 miles of trails through woods and sweeping open fields. It’s a beautiful spot for a hike. A portion runs along the Nonesuch River and there is a waterfall running in the spring. You’ll find bridge crossings over streams and bog areas. It’s lovely!

This duo recently opened in Scarborough on Route 1 to create a locally-owned market for fresh, high-quality foods in the refurbished Fire Station. They offer fish, shellfish, lobster, crab, and other seafood—creating a one stop shop with Rosemont’s carefully sourced produce, meats, dairy, beer, wine, fresh baked goods. Rosemont’s almond croissant is one of the best around.
