Why You'll LOVE it:

Why you won't:

Reason 1

We have an amazing assortment of restaurants to choose from offering lobster rolls to house-made pasta. You’ll find delicious food around every corner.

Reason 1

The food scene has boomed, so eating out can take planning and sometimes long waits, even in winter. Reserving when you plan your trip is a smart idea.

Reason 2

Love baked goods? From fresh bagels to almond croissants there are fantastic bakeries to visit.

Reason 2

Some bakeries sell out early so you have to wait in line, reserve, or plan ahead.

Reason 3

The Eastern Promenade is a gorgeous waterfront park to pass an hour or two.

Reason 3

This is Maine and we are no strangers to inclement weather! Layers are essential.

Reason 4

If you are seeking a walkable/bikeable city, you’ve got it. You’ll find bike rentals around, walk-friendly sidewalks and more bike lanes as advocacy increases.

Reason 4

Portland is a huge hill. It slopes down towards the Casco Bay on one side and down towards Deering Oaks Park on the other. As long as you know this, you’ll be fine!

A very brief summary of a few favorite highlights:

Portland’s walkable downtown with cobblestone streets, boutiques, and restaurants. You can walk by the wharfs on Commercial Street, or visit shops and cafes on Exchange and Middle Streets.

The PMA “seeks to create an inclusive space that champions open expression and makes art accessible to all”. Fantastic exhibits, films, and installations. Free on Fridays from 4-8p.

An expansive park on the East End with open green space for the perfect picnic, frequent food trucks, a playground, and walking paths with sweeping views of the Casco Bay.

“In 1807 Captain Lemuel Moody ordered construction of this octagonal, 86-ft high tower on Munjoy Hill to serve as a communication station for Portland’s bustling harbor”. Tours are generally May-Oct (fee required, not ADA accessible).

The ferry terminal is located very centrally on Commercial St. It’s a fun adventure to purchase a ticket for the 20 minute ride to Peaks. Once there, you’ll find a few restaurants, quirky local businesses, and gorgeous water views all around. There are bike and golf cart rentals available to cruise around the small residential island.
